Supporting Pieter Jooste and His Family on the Long Road to Recovery

24 August 2026 · 4 min read

Pieter Jooste during his recovery in hospital

After a horrific car accident changed the lives of Pieter Jooste and his family in an instant, we're asking our community to help support one of our own through an extraordinarily difficult road to recovery.

One of our own

This isn't an article we ever expected to be writing.

Many people within our community will know Pieter Jooste. For Finsterl Finance Managing Director William Sterling, Pieter, his wife Zoe and their young daughter Annika are much more than colleagues or friends — they're family.

William and Pieter lived and worked together for years before Pieter and Zoe started their family. They spent countless days working alongside each other and weekends playing golf together, building a friendship that has continued through different stages of their lives.

Those who know Pieter know him as one of the most genuine, caring and selfless people you could meet.

Earlier this year, everything changed.

An accident that changed everything

Pieter, Zoe and their young daughter Annika were nearing the end of a family holiday in South Africa when they were involved in a horrific car accident.

Pieter sustained catastrophic injuries and spent weeks in intensive care in South Africa, including almost 25 days in an induced coma.

Once doctors were able to stabilise him sufficiently to travel, Pieter was medically evacuated to Australia on an emergency flight, where the fight for his life continued.

Since returning home, Pieter has undergone an extraordinary number of surgeries as doctors work to treat the extensive injuries caused by the accident.

Much of his body was severely injured. His internal organs suffered significant trauma, and his medical teams have worked tirelessly not only to save his arm, but at times, his life.

More than 100 days after the accident, Pieter is awake and fighting.

But his journey is far from over.

A new career interrupted before it could begin

Shortly before the accident, Pieter had taken a leap of faith and joined Finsterl Finance to begin a new chapter in his career as a finance broker.

Like many brokers entering the industry, Pieter was in the early stages of establishing himself, developing relationships and building a client base within a predominantly commission-based profession.

Instead of having the opportunity to build that new career, Pieter's focus suddenly became something entirely different: surviving, recovering and trying to regain as much of the life he had before the accident as possible.

The circumstances surrounding his employment and broker arrangements have also made navigating insurance and workers compensation particularly difficult, adding further financial uncertainty at a time when Pieter and his family already have more than enough to deal with.

A family facing an unimaginable journey

While Pieter has been fighting through surgeries and rehabilitation, Zoe has been carrying an enormous responsibility of her own.

She has been beside Pieter throughout his recovery while also caring for their daughter, Annika, who recently celebrated her first birthday.

It's difficult to put into words what this family has endured.

There is still a long and uncertain road ahead, and Pieter's injuries mean that life for the Jooste family has changed profoundly.

Right now, however, the focus is simple: giving Pieter the opportunity to concentrate on his recovery and giving his family as much support as possible while he does it.

How you can help

A fundraising campaign has been established to help Pieter, Zoe and Annika through the months ahead.

Every contribution, regardless of its size, can help ease some of the financial pressure associated with Pieter's ongoing recovery and allow the family to focus their energy where it's needed most.

If you're in a position to donate, we would be incredibly grateful for your support.

If donating isn't possible, simply sharing Pieter's story and the fundraising campaign with others can also make a meaningful difference.

Pieter and Zoe have endured more in the past few months than most families could imagine. We're incredibly proud of the strength they've shown, and we hope our clients, partners, friends and wider community can join us in getting behind them.
